My (Korean) Skin Care Routine

A little overview of my acne journey

Acne has never been a stranger to me since I hit puberty. When I was in high school I tried the “traditional” routine for us Filipino teenagers. Using Eskinol, Maxipeel and other products are moms, titas and lolas recommend us that they used when they were young. I grew tired because nothing was working. Then came college, where I tried going to a medical clinic where I got my monthly acne surgery for 4 months, Diamond peeling and IPL facials. I was using their clinic’s products too. After months of doing those process, I saw improvement! I told myself that I will continue on with it.

And the unimaginable happen, I moved abroad. Doing the adult stuff of course. The first few months I saw no changes in my skin condition but then winter came my skin was becoming worse. I had acne all over areas where I never had them before. The worse part was the acne on my chin which hurt like hell. I decided to try Neutrogena since my mom suggested it to me. Nothing happened. For some time, I had to go to the doctor to have it checked then they suggested meds “might” help with my acne and it sorta got worse? Me being tired with all this. I just had to visit the derma again but skin clinics here will cost you a fortune. I tried it for 2 months, Cosmic peeling + products recommended by them + meds that cost me $1,300 which somehow worth it but I’m still seeing active acne. I stopped going because I would be a broke working girl.

Korean skincare became a global phenomenon. I had to do my research. Since I am jealous of their skin, who isn’t? I had to try even though I was scared at first because I had oily & sensitive skin. But me being desperate, what will I lose right?

Here’a photo of me for reference:

My Skin Type: Oily & Sensitive, Acne-prone

My Morning Routine

Step 1: Foam cleanser

First thing in the morning, I cleanse my skin with Neogen: Green Tea Foam Cleanser It’s water-based so its great to use in the morning. I know my skin reacts well with anything green tea since it’s an antioxidant. It also helps to detoxify your skin removing impurities. It feels refreshing and doesn’t strip my skin out of its moisture.

Step 2: Toner

I use Cosrx’s One Step Original Clear PadMy holy grail! This baby helped in drying my acne. It does what its supposed to do. Controls sebum, addresses blemishes and gently exfoliates. My daily acne control.

Step 3: Essense

CosRx’s Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essense is definitely one of my favorite. It made my skin so smooth and has lessened the appearance of bumps and milia on my face. I had to research the advantages of snail mucin and read wonders about it as it targets troubled skin and makes it smooth and more healthy.

Step 4: Moisturizer

In this step, I use CosRx Oil-Free Ultra Moisturizing Lotion with Birch Sap. Being a person who has oily skin, I have a love-hate relationship with moisturizers since most of it contains oil that can leave your skin look greasy. This product is an exception, it is oil-free and feels so light on my skin. My mom loves it too!

Step 5: Serum (Not daily)

Tiam – My Little Pore Fix Source Serum. I have included this recently in my morning routine. It’s light and doesn’t make my skin look oily. Wait til’ you get to my night routine.

Step 6: Suncream/Sunscreen

I am using Biore’s UV Face Milk with SPF 50+ PA++++. It’ the most important part of everyone’s morning routine and if you’re not using it, WHY?! Using sunscreen helps your skin with the protection from harmful UV rays of the sun that causes wrinkles, sun spots and other nasty things on the skin. Please use it every day you’ll thank yourself one day.

After using these products every morning, my skin feels fresh and soft all throughout the day. And now my face is not oily anymore! I need to mention that I’m not using any makeup anymore since it’s one of the culprits that cause oiliness to my skin even though I’m using oil-free foundations. Oily skin means breakout for some. My skin can now breath.

My Night Routine

I use the same products and switched products in some steps because the skin works differently at night.

Step 1: Foam cleanser

I still cleanse with my Neogen, after a tiring day my face still looks fresh.

Step 2: Toner

Same with my toner.

Step 3: Essense

I think this step is important at night since it targets the repair of the skin.

Step 4: Serum

My favorite part of this routine! This Tiam Serum works it magic at night. Since it claims that it will shrink your pores and improves the elasticity of the skin. When I wake up in the morning my skin looks so smooth, bouncy and without large pores!!!

Step 5: Moisturizer

I use CosRx’s Ultimate Moisturizing Honey Overnight Mask. Yes, I use moisturizer at night. This product helps with your acne scars since it has Propolis extract which is found in honey. It also speeds up the healing of wounds and keeps my skin blemish free.

Step 6: Night Cream

Tiam’s Face Guard Cream. This is my final step in my night routine. It protects the skin from any damages as it contains Centella extract that helps with acne & hyperpigmentation which I have. AND when I started using this it helped reduce the size of my pimple in a matter of 2 days.

When I wake in the morning my skin looks glorious! It seems like I had a facial and it looks healthy and smooth. Recently I have added 2 products with my routine that I have yet to test if it will work on my skin. I shall update you guys after a month.

There you have it my skincare routine that helped with my skin condition. You too can try this Korean skincare routine but you should take note of your skin type that’s when you’ll know what products and ingredients that will work with your skin type.

Disclaimer: All these products may be a little expensive but for me, it was worth because I saw change and it really helped me with my skin problems.

You can purchase these products at:

Philippines: BeautyMNL and Skin Curator – Ships locally

  1. Brilliant post! Moving can wreak havoc on your skin and I know how much it can affect your confidence – I used to suffer from terrible, painful acne and lots of people around me just seemed to assume it meant I was eating a terrible diet or not cleansing my skin properly. I am glad that your new regime is working for you and good luck!

    1. Same here, I’m afraid to try different skincare products since I have super sensitive skin. For masks like the literal once I love the Faceshop’s masks. But for cream masks I recommend the Rice and Honey overnight masks of CosRx. 💜
